Phase Three: Training of Jin
Jin is the perceivable expression of bodily action guided by Yi. Its emergence marks a crucial milestone in Taijiquan practice and serves as a gateway to deeper exploration of the art’s internal dynamics and primary applications. Without Jin, even years of practice may leave a practitioner outside the essential workings of Taijiquan.
1. Goal
The goal of Phase Three is to discover the existence of Jin through Method One as defined in this framework, then to identify, stabilize, and progressively expand its scope.
2. Focus
Movement
Movement is no longer constrained by visual similarity to the instructor. Posture and motion should be allowed to unfold naturally under the guidance of Yi.
Yi
Maintaining Yi remains the highest priority.
Jin
Although Jin is discovered through Method One, it is not forced or pursued directly. Jin emerges naturally from relaxation guided by Yi.
3. Milestone
It is considered a milestone in Phase Three when the Jin test can be passed, even if Jin initially manifests only within a limited stance due to its position-dependent nature. This confirms that prior training has been correct and that further refinement and expansion of Jin will follow through continued practice.
