Phase Two: Training on Yi
Yi marks the dividing line between Taijiquan and ordinary physical activity. While Mimicking enables the practitioner to perform a complete set of movements, the training remains purely physical until guided by Yi—the defining element that elevates Taijiquan practice beyond external form.
1. Goal
The goal of Phase Two is to sense, cultivate, and stabilize the five core Yi states. Practitioners should be able to maintain these Yi states during movement and restore them when they are lost.
2. Focus
Movement
Movement should remain slow. Visual similarity to the instructor is no longer a priority.
Yi
Train the five core Yi states individually, progressing until all can be maintained consistently.
Jin
It is too early to focus on Jin at this stage.
3. Milestone
It is considered a milestone in Phase Two when all five core Yi states can be clearly perceived, maintained during movement, and consciously restored when they diminish or disappear.
