Phase One: Mimicking
The first stage, Mimicking, is analogous to how a child learns to speak: through imitation rather than analysis. At this stage, the practitioner focuses on reproducing external form without attempting to understand internal mechanisms.
1. Goal
The goal of Phase One is straightforward: to learn the complete Form by following the instructor and imitating visible movements as accurately as possible.
2. Focus
Movement
Focus on similarity in posture and movement relative to the instructor, as well as smooth transitions between steps.
Yi
Yi is intentionally set aside at this stage to avoid distraction caused by premature analysis.
Jin
Jin does not emerge during this phase and should not be a training concern.
3. Milestone
It is considered a milestone in Phase One when the entire Form can be performed smoothly and without hesitation, achieving outward similarity to the instructor’s demonstration.
