Lead

Definition:

A restrained and tentative mental state expressed through a body part extending forward. Lead primarily involves the tips of the limbs—such as the fingers, hands, or toes—and initiates movement in a cautious, probing manner. The leading part moves first, inviting the rest of the body to follow naturally.

Usage:

  • As a noun: “When one’s hands extend forward, the fingers or hands must maintain a Yi of Lead, with the arms relaxed.”
  • As a verb: “When pushing out, the palms Lead the way—first mentally, then physically—followed by the forearms and upper arms.”

Additional Notes:

Lead represents an intention-driven initiation of motion, ensuring that the rest of the body follows the leading parts passively.

Any body part can serve as the initiator—even the back. For example, when reclining cautiously onto a couch, the back initiates the descent and the rest follow; in such a case, it is the back that Leads the movement of the body.
